Remembering my mom who used to prepare udad dal badi during february and march when ash gaurd is available in the market. We all are fond of this sabji. During monsoon green vegetables are costly, sometimes unavailable and many times can't go to purchase, at this time badi-aloo subji comes to rescue.
Now I learnt this skill of preparing badi out of udad dal and ash gaurd. This is stored for 1-2 yrs.
This subji is very delicious and goes with roti and rice. Its made of gravy, so no need of dal or any other things.
We used to call it bari-aloo, bari, vadi or badi all are one and the same.

- 1 bowl badi
- 3 potatoes
- 3 Onions
- 1 tsp ginger-chilli-garlic paste
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp mustard+cumin+fenugreek seeds
- 1 pinch hing
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1/2 turmeric powder
- 1 tsp garam masala
- As Per Taste Salt
- As Per Required Water
- As Required Fresh coriander leaves
Steps to make Udad dal badi aloo ki sabzi
- Take badi and break into 2-3 pieces as after boiling they will become bigger. Peel of and cut potatoes in big chunks. Keep in water so do not get black.



- Peel off and chop 1 onion roughly and put in a mixture jar along with ginger-chili-garlic paste and grind. Chop the other 2 onions into thin slices. Now heat an iron Kadai add oil and fry Badi and then add onions to fry. Take them out as it's done.



- Now in the same Kadai add mustard+cumin+fenugreek seeds and let them splutter. Add ground onion paste and saute. Then add all dry masala and saute till oil is released. Now its time to add potatoes, fried Badi, and onions. Saute for 2-3 minutes and then add salt and water. Mix it well and let it cook for 10-15 minutes on slow gas covering the lid.


- After that check the subji. Its ready so sprinkle garam masala and coriander leaves and serve it hot with roti and rice.
